Music to Write By

One difficult choice gets made every time I start the computer to begin my writing process for my next novel, Chasing The Will. Is this a day for music or a spell without?

If I’m going to use my Dragon dictating software, it’s an easy choice. Not even The Beatles can interrupt the flow of my voice into the headset for fear of a character asking for ‘Love, love, love’ or the location of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

New age music that meanders along is good for slow, thoughtful writing directly via the keyboard. If I want a quicker write, then The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays the Music of Pink Floyd gets the words flowing at a fine rate. It’s thrilling, yet rousing material to complete the march to the end of a chapter. Obviously I’d prefer to listen to the vocal version of Dark Side of The Moon, but hearing words is distracting when writing, especially if Joan Jett’s wonderful rocking song, ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,’ has managed to remain in the CD tray.
